Abstract:

West Kameng, a region defined by its rugged topography and profound ecological diversity, serves as a significant site of indigenous synthesis in Arunachal Pradesh. Home to the Monpa, Sherdukpen, Aka and Bugun tribes, the district presents a complex sociocultural mosaic. This paper examines how these communities navigate the pressures of contemporary modernization and global integration, focusing on the precarious balance between ancestral heritage and the imperatives of development. Central to this discourse is the tribes’ commitment to communal land management, which favors collective stewardship over individualistic resource extraction. Their ontological frameworks, deeply rooted in a symbiotic relationship with the Himalayan ecosystem, inform both social organization and ethical conduct. Despite the accelerating influence of digital media and external educational models, these communities exhibit remarkable adaptive strategies, selectively integrating modern amenities while safeguarding their core cultural identity. Rather than viewing the preservation of tribal heritage as a stagnant reversion to tradition, this study characterizes it as a dynamic, evolving process. Through an analysis of the interplay between geographical isolation and socio-political transition, this research highlights how West Kameng’s indigenous populations assert their sovereignty. Ultimately, the region offers a vital case study in resilience, demonstrating how marginalized communities mitigate the homogenizing forces of globalization while maintaining their distinct socio-cultural integrity.
