Abstract:
The socio-economic status of a region functions as a multidimensional manifestation of its demographic composition, educational attainment, occupational structure and infrastructural maturity. This research paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the socio-economic conditions prevailing in the Dudhnoi area of Assam’s Goalpara district. Characterized by a complex, heterogeneous ethnic landscape—predominantly inhabited by the Rabha, Bodo, Garo and various non-tribal communities—Dudhnoi serves as a critical commercial and educational nexus for the eastern periphery of Goalpara. Employed through a rigorous mixed-methods approach, the study synthesizes primary data derived from exhaustive household surveys with secondary empirical evidence retrieved from the Census of India and official District Statistical Handbooks. The investigation critically evaluates the ongoing regional transition from traditional subsistence agriculture toward market-oriented cash-crop cultivation, with particular emphasis on the burgeoning rubber and black pepper sectors. Moreover, it assesses the institutional impact of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) on local governance and socio-political stability. The findings delineate a region in a state of flux, characterized by rising literacy benchmarks yet constrained by systemic deficiencies in industrialization, specialized healthcare access and modern irrigation infrastructure. By addressing these disparities, this paper provides a nuanced understanding of the intersection between regional governance and rural development. It concludes with evidence-based policy recommendations designed to foster sustainable growth, tailored specifically to the unique ethno-geographic and socio-economic complexities that define the Dudhnoi landscape.
